Kolkata, July 25: Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has asked Kolkata Traffic Police to finalise the dates on which they can carry out a health audit for the Sealdah flyover. According to a Times of India report, Kolkata Police will have to either shut the flyover from August 10 and 12 or from August 15 to 18. Majherhat Bridge Collapse: Death Toll Stands at 3, Clearance Work Underway.

A formal notification on the closure is yet to be issued, but officials of KMDA have said that they would require at least four days to ascertain the strength of the structure. Considering it is one of the most important flyovers in the city, KDMA plans to keep open at least one flank of the flyover open for the traffic to pass.

The bridge constructed over 35 years ago is a major cause of worry as it has not been repaired and no major maintenance work has taken place. Reportedly, plants have also come up from the sides of the wall, raising more fears about the internal structure of the bridge.

Last year, three people died in the Majherhat bridge collapse in south Kolkata, and several were left injured. In 2016, under-construction Vivekananda Road flyover in the Girish Park collapsed. where more than 50 people died and 80 were injured in the incident.
