Sonam Wangchuk Says He May Be Killed in an Encounter Over Ladakh Violence; Know Why
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk claimed he may be killed in an encounter, demanding Amit Shah's resignation on the first anniversary of Leh's protest violence. While Wangchuk alleged severe oppression and sought inquiry reports, Ladakh Police rejected the claims as baseless and confirmed security measures were standard protocol.
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has expressed apprehension that he might be killed in an encounter for speaking out against the central government, while demanding the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah over last year's civilian deaths in Leh. Addressing a gathering in Ladakh on the first anniversary of the September 24 violence, Wangchuk stated that he was prepared to face any outcome if it served to awaken the nation.
As per a report by Moneycontrol, Wangchuk stated during the commemorative event that after previously being sent to jail, the remaining threat involves a staged encounter. "They have put me in jail. Now there is even a possibility that I could be encountered somewhere," the activist said, adding that he hopes such an outcome would help wake up the country. Sonam Wangchuk Demands Amit Shah Resignation and Inquiry Probe
Holding the home minister politically responsible for the fatalities during the previous year's agitation over statehood and Sixth Schedule safeguards, Wangchuk asserted that accountability must be fixed. He demanded that the findings of the judicial inquiry into the police firing be made public immediately, warning that an independent people's tribunal will otherwise be formed to investigate the incident.
Furthermore, Wangchuk alleged that unarmed protesters were subjected to indiscriminate firing from automatic weapons without proper magisterial orders. He also questioned opposition figures regarding their selective silence on the severity of the security response in the region.
Ladakh Police Reject Allegations as Baseless
A shutdown was observed across Leh and Kargil to mark the anniversary, with business establishments remaining closed while the day was commemorated by locals. Wangchuk alleged that heavy security deployment, barricades, and armed personnel restricted public participation and created an atmosphere of fear. In response, the Ladakh Police dismissed the claims as false, baseless, and misleading. Authorities clarified that permission was granted to the Ladakh Buddhist Association to hold a prayer meeting at the NDS ground, and that security barricades were strictly implemented for routine traffic and crowd management.
