Following the start of the holy month of Ramadan earlier this week, Muslims in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are looking ahead to the expected dates for Eid al-Fitr 2026. Astronomical calculations currently suggest that Eid 2026 or Eid al-Fitr is likely to fall on Friday, March 20. However, the official Eid 2026 date remains subject to the sighting of the new crescent moon by religious authorities toward the end of the month.
Ramadan 2026 officially began in both Saudi Arabia and the UAE on Wednesday, February 18. The commencement was confirmed following the sighting of the lunar crescent on the evening of Tuesday, February 17.
Since then, millions across the Gulf region have transitioned into a period of dawn-to-dusk fasting, increased prayer, and charitable giving. In both nations, the start of the holy month has been accompanied by shortened working hours for both public and private sector employees, a tradition aimed at facilitating spiritual observance and family gatherings. Ramadan 2026 Guide: Full List of What Breaks Your Fast and What Doesn't.
Eid 2026 Date: When Is Eid al-Fitr Moon Sighting in Saudi Arabia and UAE?
Eid or Eid al-Fitr is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal month. The determination of Eid al-Fitr date depends on whether Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days. This is governed by the Islamic lunar calendar (Hijri), where months are determined by the lunar cycle rather than a fixed number of days.
- Scenario 1: If the Shawwal crescent moon is sighted on the evening of the 29th day of Ramadan (March 18), Eid will begin the following day, March 19.
- Scenario 2: If the moon is not visible, Ramadan will complete 30 days, placing the first day of Eid on Friday, March 20.
Current astronomical projections from Dubaiâs Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD) and various regional observatories lean toward the latter, predicting a 30-day fast for 2026. Ramzan Calendar 2026: Full 30-Day Sehri and Iftar Timetable for Mumbai, Delhi, Lucknow and More.
Eid 2026 Holidays
Governments in the region typically grant a multi-day break for Eid al-Fitr. In the UAE, the official public holiday calendar designates the period from the 1st to the 3rd of Shawwal for celebrations.
In Saudi Arabia, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development generally announces a four-day holiday for the private and non-profit sectors. If Eid begins on March 20 as expected, residents in both countries could look forward to a long weekend, providing ample time for the traditional Eid prayers, family visits, and community feasts.
