The Hilal Committee meeting is currently underway in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). While no moon sighting claims have come forward from any part of the Emirates, the hilal crescent has been sighted in neighbouring Saudi Arabia.

The sighting of the moon marks the beginning of Eid celebration as well as the end of the Islamic holy month of fasting – Ramadan. Eid al-Fitr is celebrated on the first day of the month of Shawwal. A new month, under the Islamic lunar calendar, begins upon the sighting of a crescent moon on the 29th day of the ongoing month. Muslims in the UAE have observed 29 Ramadan fasts till today and will try to see the crescent moon. If the moon is not sighted, Ramadan month will complete 30 days and Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on June 5. As part of Eid celebrations, Muslims offer a special prayer in open areas like fields, community centres, etc. or at mosques. Revellers visit homes of their relatives and friends and special sweet dishes are relished.
