Maghi Ganesh Jayanti Rituals

In Maharashtra, Ganesha Chaturthi is one of the most famous festivals and is celebrated with great fervour, but that is an annual observance, not Ganesha’s birth anniversary. It must be noted that Ganesha Jayanti during Magha month is considered the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha. On this day, devotees observe a day-long fast, worship Lord Ganesha, and seek his blessings for a good and prosperous life. Devotees take a bath with sesame seeds mixed in water. Ganesha temples are decorated with flowers on this day, and offerings, including ladoos made of til and jaggery, are made to the Lord. In some households and temples, small images of Ganesha are placed in cradles and worshipped.

On the day of Ganesha Chaturthi, an image of Ganesha, in symbolic conical form, is made out of turmeric or 'sindoor' powder or sometimes of cow dung and is worshipped. It is later immersed in water on the fourth day after the festival. A special preparation made of til (sesame seeds) is offered to Ganesha and then distributed to the devotees as prasad for eating. A fast is observed during worship during the day, followed by feasting at night as a part of the rituals.

Maghi Ganesh Jayanti Celebrations

Ganesh Jayanti is an auspicious day and is considered very important by devotees of Lord Ganesha. On this day, in large numbers, devotees flock to the Moreshwar temple in Morgaon, Pune district of Maharashtra. The temple is starting and ending point of a pilgrimage of eight revered Ganesha temples called Ashtavinayaka. Moreover, another temple of the Ashtavinayak circuit is the Siddhivinayaka temple at Siddhatek, Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, where large crowds visit on the occasion of Ganesh Jayanti. This ancient temple on the Bhima River's eastern bank has an idol of Ganesha, seated in a crossed-leg posture flanked by his consort Siddhi. On the Konkan Coast, at Ganpatipule, a beach temple houses a 'swayambhu' idol of Ganesha, which is much venerated and visited by thousands of devotees yearly.
