Ever since that day, Uttarakhand became an independent state.  Hence, this day is celebrated as the Foundation Day in Uttarakhand. However, the name of the state was changed from "Uttaranchal" to "Uttarakhand" from 1 January 2007.

Uttarakhand (formerly known as Uttaranchal) is a beautiful tourist state located in North India. The state is extremely beautiful as it is crossed by the massive snow-capped, the Himalayas. It is known for its Hindu pilgrimage sites.  On 7 November 2000, after several years of movement Uttarakhand formed the twenty-seventh state of the Republic of India. The state shares borders with Tibet in the north, Nepal in the east with Himachal Pradesh in the west and Uttar Pradesh in the south.

Before its formation in 2000, it was a part of Uttar Pradesh. Uttarakhand literally translates to the northern region or part in Hindi and Sanskrit. The state an extremely popular pilgrimage hotspot for people with Yamunotri. It is considered sacred sites of Hinduism and the origin of the largest rivers of India, Ganga and Yamuna.
