Members of the wedding party tried to explain that the couple had nothing to do with Ronaldo. Footage of the incident quickly circulated online and eventually reached Ronaldo himself. The Al-Nassr forward reportedly responded to the scenes on Instagram with laughing emojis.

The unusual incident came amid widespread speculation that Ronaldo and Rodriguez could be preparing to marry in Madeira. Reports had previously linked the couple to a ceremony at Funchal Cathedral following their engagement in August 2025. The confusion was also linked to a series of unverified reports circulating on social media. A purported wedding invitation had reportedly claimed that Ronaldo and Rodriguez would marry in Portugal, while other reports had linked them to different venues.
Some of those claims were subsequently debunked. HOLA! magazine reportedly noted that Quinta da Regaleira, another location linked to the rumours, remained open to visitors on the date of the supposed ceremony.
Ronaldo and Rodriguez announced their engagement in August 2025 after being together for several years. Ronaldo had previously said he intended to marry Rodriguez after the 2026 World Cup, which further fuelled speculation about when and where the ceremony would take place.
For the couple who actually married at Funchal Cathedral, however, their wedding day became an unexpected global talking point after thousands of Ronaldo fans turned up believing they were witnessing the football star's big day.
