According to a recent survey by Organization for Economic co-operation and Development (OECD), Indian men spend 51.8 minutes in a day doing unpaid work, which means they don't even spend an hour to do some everyday routine job like- cooking, doing laundry, home maintenance and other essential work. On the other hand, women spend 351.9 minutes of their time doing unpaid work. Indian men, in fact, rank third lowest in the chart concerning unpaid work.

However, Japan and Korea rank lower than even India with men spending lesser time doing routine work. As per the statistics, in Japan, a man spends roughly 40.8 minutes a day, whereas Korean men will spend 45.0 minutes in a day doing unpaid work.

The statistics completely reverses when it comes to paid work, Indian men spend 390.6 minutes a day, whereas women contribute 184.7 minutes in a day doing job for which they are paid. So the total number of minutes a man works in India is less than that of a woman. A man spends 442.3 minutes a day as compared to a woman who ends up spending 536.6 minutes.

Denmark ranks the highest when it comes to men contributing their time in doing unpaid work. Men there spend 186.1 minutes in a day, and women spend 242.8 minutes doing routine work.

According to reports, the reason why men spend less time doing routine or household work is because of their upbringing. We have always been a patriarchal society, where men doing routine work is never encouraged. However, the scenario has changed today, with men wanting to take an equal responsibility in doing the regular household work. According to a 2014 OECD report of the same, men used to spend 19 minutes of their time as compared to women spending 298 on routine housework. No doubt, the numbers have improved in the last four years, but there is a long way to go for Indian men.
