A 68-year-old woman in Karnataka who spent much of her life begging died of an age-related illness, leaving behind INR 8.4 lakh in coins and currency notes accumulated over the years. The woman, identified as Hoor, was found dead at her rented home in Mandya, according to a PTI.

After her death, locals inspecting the house were surprised to find more than 30 sacks containing thousands of coins and currency notes among her belongings. A video from Hoor's home showed locals going through her belongings and counting the large collection of coins and notes. According to an NDTV report, the money had been accumulated over several years while Hoor earned her living by begging.

Hoor had lived in the rented house with her sister. Both women were unmarried and lived together until Hoor's sister died two years ago. Hoor continued to stay in the house after her sister's death. Following her death, the money recovered from the house was handed over to her two brothers.

Indore Beggar Found With Properties, Vehicles

The Karnataka discovery comes months after a similar case in Madhya Pradesh, where a government campaign to remove begging from the streets of Indore uncovered the assets of a man identified as Mangilal.

In January, the “Beggar-free Indore” campaign found that Mangilal owned property and vehicles reportedly worth crores of rupees.

The campaign was launched to help people dependent on begging find alternative means of livelihood. During the drive, teams from the Madhya Pradesh Women and Child Development Department identified Mangilal in the Sarafa Bazaar area, where he had reportedly been seen for years receiving money from passers-by, The Times of India reported.

Three Houses And Four Vehicles

Officials found that Mangilal owned three houses in different parts of Indore, including a multi-storey building and a 600-square-foot house, according to reports by India Today and The Times of India. He also owned three auto-rickshaws and a Swift Dzire, which he reportedly rented out to generate income.

Mangilal had also received a one-bedroom house under the PMAY scheme, intended to provide housing assistance to people in need, despite already owning property. Officials are investigating how he became eligible for the government housing benefit.

The investigation also found that Mangilal worked as a moneylender, reportedly providing loans to small shopkeepers in Sarafa Bazaar and collecting interest.

Authorities said charging high interest is illegal and indicated that the matter would be examined as part of the investigation. The two cases are separate, but both have drawn attention to the savings and assets accumulated by people who publicly relied on begging as a source of income.
