Mystery Cat Covered in Red Dye Roams Texas, Rescuers Urge Public Not To Feed Her; Here’s Why

A gray cat covered in bright red dye or paint has sparked concern in League City, Texas, after being spotted roaming the community. League City Animal Care is trying to safely capture the cat and provide the care it needs, but officials are urging residents not to approach, feed or attempt to catch the animal because doing so could interfere with the rescue effort.

Rescuers Ask Residents Not to Approach Cat

League City Animal Care first highlighted the case in a Thursday, Aug. 6, Facebook post featuring images of the cat, whose gray fur can be seen beneath patches of red.

"Our team is actively working to safely trap and get this cat into our care so she can receive the attention she needs." Officials specifically asked residents not to catch the cat or leave food for her.

"Please do not attempt to catch or put food out at this time," the post read. "While we know it comes from a place of kindness, additional food and attempts to approach this cutie can make it more difficult for our trapping efforts to be successful."

Public Asked to Share Sightings

In a Monday update, rescuers said they were continuing efforts to safely trap the cat with help from cat caregivers in the area where she has been seen.

Anyone who spots the cat has been asked to message League City Animal Care with her location and the time of the sighting.

The shelter said there is no need to contact Animal Control because officials are already aware of the situation and are working to bring the cat to safety.

Red Paint Fuels Online Speculation

Images of the cat have generated significant concern and discussion online. Some social media users questioned whether the animal could have been connected to an illegal dog-fighting operation.

"I could be wrong, but aren't 'painted' animals usually associated with illegal dog fighting rings?" questioned one user. "Could be it escaped from such a situation, and maybe investigations need to be made about possible dog fighting rings in our area?"

Another user wrote, "I hope the police are involved to catch who did this. You know someone has a video of this being done."

However, there is currently no confirmed evidence in the information released by authorities linking the cat to a dog-fighting ring.

Local law enforcement has not yet announced an active investigation or any potential charges of animal cruelty, KTRK reported.

Shelter Limits Comments Amid Online Response

The case has attracted considerable attention online, with the shelter eventually limiting comments on its social media post.

"Comments have been limited due to overwhelming response; we appreciate all of you trying to help or thanking the shelter and staff for trying to help this cat," the organization wrote.

For now, League City Animal Care is asking residents to allow trained rescuers to handle the capture attempt. People who spot the red-covered cat are being urged to send the shelter the exact time and location of the sighting rather than trying to approach her.
