Delhi High Court Refuses To Permit Euthanasia of 30-Year-Old Man in Vegetative State for 10 Years, Says ‘No One Permitted To Cause Death of Another Person’

The Delhi High Court recently refused to pass orders for the constitution of a medical board to examine euthanasia (mercy killing) of a man who has been in a permanent vegetative state for over 10 years. Justice Subramonium Prasad passed the order on July 2 and rejected the filed by 30-year-old Harish Rana. The court noted that Rana was not being kept alive mechanically and that he was able to sustain himself without any extra external aid. The petitioner moved the High Court through his parents and sought directions to constitute a medical board to examine his health condition for the administration of euthanasia. It is reported that Rana has been confined to his bed since 2013 after he suffered head injuries due to a fall at his paying guesthouse. It is also reported that Rana has not responded in the last 11 years. "The petitioner is thus living and no one, including a physician, is permitted to cause death of another person by administering any lethal drug, even if the objective is to relieve the patient from pain and suffering," the court added.
