A tiger strayed into a village near the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh’s Umaria district on Monday morning, December 29, injuring a villager and triggering panic among residents before being safely rescued by forest officials. The incident occurred in Chhoti Beldi village, located in the Panpatha buffer zone, where the big cat reportedly attacked a cow and later entered a house, sitting briefly on a cot. Gopal Kol, a 25-year-old tribal resident who attempted to drive the animal away, suffered serious leg injuries and was taken to a hospital in neighbouring Katni district for treatment. Following alerts from villagers, teams from the forest, revenue, and police departments cordoned off the area and tranquilised the tiger after several hours. Officials said the animal has been moved to the Baheraha enclosure inside the reserve for monitoring and have urged villagers to remain cautious amid continued wildlife movement in the area.
