Earlier, England won the toss and opted to bowl first on a hot afternoon in Mumbai. Both England and South Africa had suffered shock defeats to Afghanistan and Netherlands in their previous matches.
South Africa were in some mood for big-hitting as they amassed a mammoth 399/7 against England in their ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on October 21. Klaasen smashed a 61-ball hundred and eventually finished with a 67-ball 109 which included 12 fours and four sixes. He was ably assisted by Marco Jansen, who also scored 75 runs off 42 balls with six sixes and three fours. Reeza Hendricks had earlier 85 runs off 75 balls at the top of the order. South Africa were without regular captain Temba Bavuma, who was ruled out with illness and Aiden Markram led the side in his absence. For England, Reece Topley was the best bowler with figures of 3/88. Gus Atkinson and Adil Rashid also got two wickets each.
