Sri Lanka batted first in the game, putting up a target of 292 on the board riding on a stunning knock from Kushal Mendis. To qualify Afghanistan needed to chase the target in 37.1 overs. During the chase, Afghanistan started stumbling by losing early wickets. Mohammad Nabi and Hashmatullah Shahidi changed the game, Nabi specifically ended up playing a blinder. After Nabi and Shahidi's dismissal, Karim Janat, Najibullah Zadran and Rashid Khan provided their combined efforts but still fell short by a short margin.
