The ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 will be hosted in England and Wales. This is the fifth time that England and Wales are hosting the World Cup tournament. This time the hosts will be hoping to give their best as they are yet to win the tournament. The team has been a runner up thrice- 1979, 1987, 1992. England 1975-1983

The first three editions of the World Cup were held in England and Wales. Interestingly the finals of all three World Cups took place at the Mecca of Cricket, Lord’s.   In 1975, it was West Indies who defeated Australia in the finals of the World Cup 1975 and clinched the first ever World Cup trophy. Placed in Group A in the league stage, England got knocked out of the tournament in the semi-finals as they lost to Australia by four wickets. In 1979, England lost to West Indies in the finals of the tournament as the visitors defeated the hosts by 92 runs. India, Pakistan- 1987

For the first time, India hosted the World Cup in the year 1987. India was placed in Group A whereas, Pakistan was in Group B in the league stage. Both India and Pakistan led their respective groups but got knocked out in the semi-finals. Australia, New Zealand- 1992

Now this edition of the World Cup 1992 was lifted by Imran Khan and men. While New Zealand got knocked out of the tournament after doing exceptionally well in the league stage, Australia was placed on number five of the table. New Zealand lost To Pakistan by four wickets. India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan-1996

Hosts Sri Lanka lifted the World Cup 1996 whereas, India got knocked out in the Semi-finals after losing to the World Cup winners. India defeated Pakistan by 39 runs in the quarterfinals of the World Cup 1996.

England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Netherlands-1999

England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Netherlands hosted the World Cup 1999. England and Scotland both got knocked out in the league stage itself.

Kenya, South Africa, Zimbabwe- 2003 

During this season of 2003, Zimbabwe and Kenya emerged as a surprise package for all the fans. Kenya advanced to the Super Six and then the semi-finals as they faced India where Sourav Ganguly and men defeated them by 91 runs. Zimbabwe lost in the Super Six stage. South Africa was shown the exit door in the league stage itself and was unable to secure a berth in the Super Six.

West Indies- 2007

West Indies hosted the World Cup in 2007. Australia won this edition of the World Cup. Hosts West Indies were placed in Group D and could only register a berth in the Super Eight stage.

India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka-2011

This was the most memorable time for the fans as MS Dhoni and team defeated their co-hosts Sri Lanka by six wickets to win the World Cup after 28 years. Bangladesh could not even reach the knockout stage of the tournament.

Australia and New Zealand -2015

Placed in Pool A of the table, Australia and New Zealand both did quite well in the league stage. Both the teams did extremely well in the tournament and reached the finals. But in the end, Australia had the last laugh as they defeated the Kiwis by seven wickets.

The upcoming edition of the World Cup will begin on May 30, 2019. The first match will be held between the hosts England and South Africa at the Oval Stadium.
