Punjab Kings all-rounder Shashank Singh and his father, retired Special Director General (DG) of Police Shailesh Singh, have been booked by the Madhya Pradesh Police following allegations of assault and verbal abuse. The First Information Report (FIR) was filed at the Ratibad police station in Bhopal after a cook employed at their residence accused them of physical violence, confinement, and confiscating his mobile phone.

The Dispute and Allegations

The complainant, 31-year-old Vipendra Singh Tomar from the Rewa district, had recently relocated to Bhopal and started working at the family’s bungalow on June 25. Tomar stated that he agreed to the role under the promise of a INR 15,000 monthly salary along with free food and accommodation. According to the written complaint, the working dynamic deteriorated rapidly. Tomar alleged that the family began nitpicking his work almost immediately and took his phone.

"On June 28, after preparing breakfast, I asked Shailesh Singh to return my mobile phone, but he refused. Upset over this, I went to my room," Tomar told the police. Tomar further alleged that when he expressed a desire to quit due to the hostile work environment, the situation escalated into violence. The complainant stated: "Shailesh Singh, his son Shashank Singh and their driver entered my room, abused me and started assaulting me with their hands and fists. After beating me, they forced me out of the house." Tomar also claimed that the accused forcibly transferred INR 1,000 from his mobile device, asserting it was to cover his food and lodging expenses before expelling him. Following the incident, the complainant approached local law enforcement with his relatives to seek legal recourse.

Police Investigation and Charges

Acting on the complaint, the Ratibad police conducted a medical examination, which confirmed visible injury marks on the victim's face and body. Law enforcement subsequently registered a case against the cricketer, his father, and their driver, identified as Mishra. The case has been filed under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), invoking:

  • Section 296(B): Public verbal abuse and obscene acts.
  • Section 115(2): Voluntarily causing hurt.
  • Section 3(5): Joint criminal liability or acts done by multiple individuals with a common intention.

Counterclaims and Background

The high-profile nature of the case has drawn significant attention given the family's public standing. Shashank Singh currently plays for the Punjab Kings franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL), while his father, Shailesh Singh, is a prominent retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer who previously served as the Special DG of Police in Madhya Pradesh. When contacted regarding the FIR, Shashank Singh denied the allegations and claimed the narrative had been fabricated. The cricketer stated that his mother had caught the newly hired cook in an inebriated state, leading to his dismissal. Singh further added that upon checking with local authorities in the cook’s native district of Rewa, they were informed that Tomar is a habitual alcoholic.

Bhopal police officials have emphasised that because the complaint involves high-profile individuals, the case is being managed with strict scrutiny, and a comprehensive investigation is currently underway to verify both accounts.
