With five rounds remaining after the United States Grand Prix, a maximum of 130 points will remain available following Sunday’s race. Should Antonelli convert his pole position into a win and outscore Russell by 24 points or more, the Italian will mathematically wrap up the 2026 World Drivers' Championship with rounds to spare.
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli produced a commanding qualifying performance at the Circuit of the Americas to secure pole position for the 2026 United States Grand Prix. The Italian teenager, who holds a commanding 102-point lead at the top of the Drivers’ Championship standings, edged out Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to put himself in prime position to potentially seal his first Formula 1 world title on Sunday. Antonelli edges Verstappen in tight Austin shootout
Antonelli set the benchmark early in the final Q3 session with a lap of 1:34.035 around the Austin circuit. Despite late efforts from rivals, track temperatures cooled and neither Verstappen nor the chasing pack could eclipse the initial benchmark.
Verstappen finished 0.179 seconds adrift in second place to lock out the front row alongside the championship leader. Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar backed up his teammate by securing third on the grid, narrowly outpacing Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, who completed the top five.
Antonelli’s teammate and primary championship rival, George Russell, endured a difficult session and will start from sixth on the grid, placing him at a tactical disadvantage heading into the 56-lap race.
Championship permutations favour the Italian
Antonelli entered the Austin weekend with 340 points following eight race victories this season, holding a 102-point advantage over Russell (238 points) and an 111-point lead over Hamilton (229 points).
