Bayern Munich Head Coach Vincent Kompany Out for 'Weeks, Not Days' Following Hospitalisation; Aaron Danks Takes Charge
Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany, 40, has been hospitalised with a viral infection after collapsing in training, with the club confirming he will miss 'weeks, not days.' Assistant coach Aaron Danks, 43, will step in to lead the Bundesliga champions against SC Freiburg at Europa-Park Stadion on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at 16:30 GMT.
Bayern Munich are set to be without head coach Vincent Kompany for 'weeks, not days' after the 40-year-old Belgian was hospitalised on Friday following a collapse during a training session. The club confirmed Kompany is stable but will remain under medical care for a viral infection he had been battling. The alarming incident occurred on Friday, October 23, 2026, when Kompany collapsed while observing Bayern’s reserve team training. He had previously missed training and a press conference earlier in the week due to the virus, before returning to the dugout for Wednesday's 2-2 Champions League draw against Arsenal. Speaking after that match, Kompany admitted, 'I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course I didn't listen to my body — and then at some point my body just said, 'enough is enough!'
Bayern's sporting director Max Eberl confirmed Kompany's stable condition on Saturday, October 24, but stressed that the priority is the coach's full recovery. 'We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure he recovers quickly. Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, as well as all the time he needs,' Eberl stated.
Aaron Danks Steps Up for Freiburg Clash
In Kompany's absence, English assistant coach Aaron Danks, 43, will take the helm, starting with Sunday's Bundesliga encounter against SC Freiburg. Danks had already stepped in for media duties and training earlier in the week when Kompany was first unwell. He is now tasked with leading the reigning champions, who appointed Kompany in 2024 and saw him guide them to back-to-back Bundesliga titles in his first two seasons, along with the German Cup in 2026.
