The Indian men's and women's national hockey teams are set to don a vibrant saffron kit as their primary jersey at the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup, a significant departure from their long-standing blue identity. Hockey India (HI) officially confirmed the colour change on July 27, responding to public debate and criticism by outlining the strategic reasons behind the move. The federation emphasized that the decision was rooted in both technical necessity and national pride. Saffron-Coloured New India Jersey for FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Unveiled.

Why Indian Hockey Team Jersey Changed to Orange from Blue?

Hockey India clarified that the primary reason for the switch was a technical one: enhancing player visibility on the field. "It was observed that the blue playing uniform tended to blend/merge with the blue synthetic playing surface, which is now the standard colour of international hockey pitches. This visual similarity affected on-field clarity and visibility for the players," Hockey India stated in an official release. This feedback reportedly came after "detailed consultations" with players, coaches, and support staff, who suggested alternative colours like yellow or saffron.

Beyond the practical considerations, Hockey India also highlighted the symbolic importance of saffron. The colour, a prominent part of the Indian national flag, was chosen to represent 'courage, sacrifice, and national pride'. Hockey India President Dilip Kumar Tirkey echoed this, adding that the request for a new primary colour came directly from the players and coaching staff.

Design and Public Reaction

The new saffron jersey features a contemporary design, incorporating 'Mandala' inspired patterns that celebrate India's cultural heritage. Deep navy blue accents, inspired by the Ashoka Chakra, symbolize progress, peace, and focus, while a tricolour piping along the shoulders and sides reinforces national pride. The word 'INDIA' is also prominently displayed in stylized Devanagari script. An alternate white jersey with the same design will also be available. Hockey India Announces 20-Man Squad for FIH Men's World Cup 2026, Harmanpreet Singh Named Captain.

The jersey change has not been without its critics. Former India captain Viren Rasquinha expressed his disapproval on social media, calling the move "embarrassing" and emphasizing the team's long-standing "legacy & identity" with the blue jersey. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also weighed in, criticizing the change and suggesting political undertones. Hockey India, however, maintained that such changes are not unprecedented, citing instances where India wore yellow at the 2014 FIH Hockey World Cup and a redesigned sky-blue kit in 2018.

As the Indian teams prepare for the prestigious tournament, the new saffron jersey marks a significant visual transformation, aimed at optimizing on-field performance while proudly representing the nation's spirit on the international stage. This shift reflects both a strategic response to modern game demands and a vibrant embrace of national symbolism.
