Islam Makhachev Creates History
Makhachev, 35, entered the Octagon with a professional record of 28 wins and 1 loss, having previously tied Anderson Silva's record of 16 consecutive wins when he captured the welterweight title against Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 on November 15, 2025. His challenger, 29-year-old Ian Machado Garry, an Irish prospect with a pre-fight record of 17 wins and 1 loss, aimed to dethrone the champion and seize his first UFC title.
Fight Recap
The main event unfolded as a strategic battle, largely controlled by Makhachev's renowned grappling and pressure. The champion from Dagestan had significant success in the early rounds, utilizing his wrestling to control the pace and limit Garry's offensive opportunities. While Garry managed to land some significant strikes, particularly in the third round where he out-landed Makhachev, the champion consistently reverted to his wrestling to neutralize the Irishman's striking prowess.
The judges' scorecards reflected Makhachev's comprehensive performance, awarding him the fight via unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 48-47). This hard-fought victory not only ensured the retention of his Welterweight Championship but also etched his name into the UFC record books with 17 straight wins, surpassing Anderson Silva's legendary streak of 16.
Historic Achievement
Before this historic bout, Makhachev had already established himself as a dominant force. He was the former UFC Lightweight Champion, a title he vacated in May 2025, to pursue greatness in the welterweight division. His successful title defense against Garry now makes him only the fifth two-division champion in UFC history to achieve successful title defenses in both divisions, further solidifying his status as one of the sport's all-time greats.
Ian Machado Garry, despite the loss, delivered a resilient performance, demonstrating his ability to compete at the highest level. His record now stands at 17 wins and 2 losses. Conor McGregor's MMA Return Ends in 69-Second Knee Injury Against Max Holloway at UFC 329.
