Mumbai, March 28: Golf legend Tiger Woods was arrested and charged with driving under the influence on Friday afternoon, March 27, following a two-vehicle rollover crash near his home on Jupiter Island. According to the Martin County Sheriff's Office, the 50-year-old was driving a Land Rover shortly before 2:00 PM when he attempted to overtake a truck on a narrow two-lane road. Authorities stated that Woods' vehicle clipped the back of a trailer being towed by the truck, causing the Land Rover to flip onto its side and slide a significant distance before coming to a rest.

Evidence of Impairment at Accident Scene, Says Sheriff John Budensiek

Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek told reporters that while Woods was able to crawl out of the vehicle and appeared uninjured, he "exemplified signs of impairment" at the scene. Tiger Woods Arrested on DUI Charges After Rollover Car Crash in Florida.

During the investigation, Woods cooperated with a Breathalyser test, which yielded a "triple zero" result, indicating no alcohol was in his system. However, the sheriff noted that investigators believe Woods was under the influence of "some type of medication or drug". Woods reportedly refused to submit to a urine test at the scene. He was subsequently taken into custody and charged with DUI, property damage, and refusal to submit to a lawful test.

The crash occurred on South Beach Road, a residential area with a 30 mph speed limit. The driver of the other vehicle, a pressure-cleaning truck, told investigators he saw the Land Rover approaching at a high rate of speed in his mirror and attempted to pull over to avoid a collision. Despite the Land Rover rolling onto the driver's side, no injuries were reported for either Woods or the other driver. Following Florida protocol, Woods was booked into the Martin County Jail, where he was required to be held for at least eight hours before being eligible for release on bond.

Context and Career Impact of the Florida Car Crash

This incident marks the fourth high-profile vehicle accident for Woods and his second DUI arrest.

  • 2017: Woods was found asleep at the wheel in Jupiter, Florida. He later attributed the incident to an adverse reaction to prescription pain medication.
  • 2021: He suffered catastrophic leg injuries in a high-speed rollover crash in Los Angeles, which required multiple surgeries and a long period of rehabilitation.

The arrest comes at a sensitive time for the 15-time major champion, who turned 50 this year. Woods had recently returned to competitive action in the TGL indoor golf league and was weighing whether his physical condition would allow him to compete in next month's Masters tournament in Augusta, Georgia.
