Apple Inc. is reportedly preparing to unveil its highly anticipated smart home device featuring a display on October 13, marking a major expansion into domestic automation hardware. Codenamed J490, the upcoming countertop hub is designed to serve as a central interface for smart-home controls, FaceTime communications, and Apple's revamped artificial intelligence assistant, Siri.
The device features a roughly 6-inch square display mounted on a polished metal arm connected to a rounded speaker base, drawing aesthetic inspiration from classic Apple hardware designs. As per a report by Business Standard, the hardware relies on a wired USB-C connection for power and includes a front-facing camera for video calls and facial recognition.  128GB vs 256GB: How Much Smartphone Storage Do You Really Need?.
Smart Home Hub Display and Personalised Features
One of the standout capabilities of the new home hub is its ability to automatically recognise individual household members through voice patterns or facial identification. Upon detecting a user, the interface dynamically updates to display personalised information such as private messages, calendar appointments, contact lists, and notes, while incorporating a visitor mode to safeguard privacy when guests are present.
The software architecture blends elements from iPadOS, watchOS, and iOS, utilizing widgets and grid-based icons for weather, media playback, and appliance management. Alongside the countertop edition, Apple is also reportedly developing a wall-mounted variation and a more advanced robotic arm model equipped with a larger 9-inch screen.
