Meta To Track Employee Clicks and Keystrokes for AI Development Amid May 20 Layoffs

Meta is tracking US employees' keystrokes, clicks, and screen content to train autonomous AI agents to perform work tasks. This 'Model Capability Initiative' aims to teach AI how to navigate software like humans. The move comes as Meta prepares to lay off 10 per cent of its staff in May 2026, raising significant workplace surveillance concerns.

Meta has begun installing specialised tracking software on the work computers of its US-based employees to capture granular behavioural data, including mouse movements, clicks, and every keystroke. Internal memos dated April 21 reveal that the initiative is part of a high-stakes push to train "autonomous AI agents" capable of performing complex professional tasks. The move signals a shift in corporate AI development, where human employees are now effectively serving as the live training data for their potential digital replacements.

The 'Model Capability Initiative' and Data Harvesting by Meta

The new tracking tool, dubbed the Model Capability Initiative (MCI), operates across all work-related applications and websites. In addition to logging physical inputs, the software takes periodic snapshots of employee screens to provide visual context for the AI models. Tech Layoffs Cross 81,000; Oracle, Amazon, Meta Lead.

According to memos from Meta’s SuperIntelligence Labs, the data is intended to help AI overcome current hurdles in human-computer interaction, such as navigating complex dropdown menus or mastering intricate keyboard shortcuts. "This is where all Meta employees can help our models get better simply by doing their daily work," one memo stated.

The 'Agent Transformation Accelerator' Vision

The tracking program is a central pillar of Meta's broader "AI for Work" strategy, recently rebranded as the Agent Transformation Accelerator (ATA). Meta Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth informed staffers that the company’s ultimate goal is a "regime change" in how work is produced. "The vision we are building towards is one where our agents primarily do the work and our role is to direct, review, and help them improve," Bosworth said. This vision includes creating a feedback loop where AI agents observe human intervention to learn how to avoid mistakes in future iterations. Meta Layoffs Coming: Mark Zuckerberg’s Firm To Announce Fresh Job Cuts on May 20 Affecting 8,000 Positions, Says Report.

Workforce Overhaul and Impending Layoffs

The rollout of MCI coincides with significant structural changes at the social media giant. Meta recently formed a new Applied AI (AAI) engineering team, led by Maher Saba, which has begun mandatory transfers of top software engineers to focus on building these autonomous tools. These developments come as the company prepares for a global workforce reduction. Meta is scheduled to begin laying off approximately 10 per cent of its global workforce (roughly 8,000 employees) on May 20, with further cuts anticipated later in the year.
