Microsoft Unveils Biggest Copilot Overhaul With Home, Code and Autopilot Features

Microsoft has announced its biggest update to Copilot so far, bringing together four major capabilities, Home, Code, Office integration and Autopilot, as the company reimagines its AI assistant to work more closely with the tools people already use for work. The update was detailed by Jared Spataro, Chief Marketing Officer for AI at Work, and separately announced by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who described Copilot as a new operating system for work spanning every model, form factor and task.

Home Brings Chat And Cowork Together With Office Built In

Home is being introduced as the new starting point inside Copilot, combining Chat and Cowork in a single place. Chat is designed for quick, conversational tasks such as lookups and draft creation, while Cowork is meant for larger tasks that users delegate entirely, such as an RFP response, a launch kit or a financial close package, which the system runs end to end. Microsoft Launches 4th Cloud Region in India, Expands AI Infrastructure With USD 20.5B Investment.

Copilot is also getting Office in Copilot, bringing the full functionality of Word, Excel and PowerPoint directly into the Copilot experience. This allows users to create or edit real, editable documents, spreadsheets and presentations from within Copilot itself, with changes staying synced across the Office apps and visible to teammates in real time.

Code Lets Anyone Build Apps And Dashboards With Copilot

Code is a new capability that allows users, including those without a development background, to build small custom applications, trackers, dashboards, automations or workflows simply by describing what they need in natural language. It is powered by the same underlying technology as GitHub Copilot and runs in a sandboxed environment that can be hosted securely inside an organization's own tenant. Microsoft Copilot Super App: Unified AI Platform Launch Expected by October 2026, Confirms CEO Satya Nadella.

To support this, Microsoft is also introducing Copilot Managed Runtime, hosting infrastructure that allows apps built through Code, Cowork and Copilot Studio to run safely within a company's Microsoft 365 environment while remaining governed by IT.

Autopilot Is A Persistent Agent That Works Without Constant Prompts

Autopilot, previously known as Scout, is described as a digital teammate that can be assigned a name, role and goal, after which it continues working independently, following up on threads, running recurring tasks and picking up projects even days later without needing a new prompt each time. It is cloud hosted and operates with its own identity, memory and workspace inside an organization's tenant, and can be tagged directly in tools like Teams and Outlook similar to a human colleague.

New Teams Integration And Business Context Expansion

Microsoft is also rolling out the ability to invoke Copilot directly inside Teams, where it can draw on the shared context and permissions of a channel, group chat or meeting to answer questions and even prepare cross functional reviews when a decision affects multiple teams.

Alongside this, Copilot is being grounded further in Microsoft IQ, the company's unified intelligence platform, with expanded access to business context from Fabric IQ, Power BI semantic models, and data from Dynamics 365 and Power Platform, allowing Copilot to pull in relevant business information without users needing to switch apps.

Today Feature And FinOps Tools For Managing AI Spend

Microsoft also gave a preview of an upcoming feature called Today, a proactive command center inside Home that will surface important updates across mail, calendar, Teams threads, meetings and tasks, and is expected to enter private preview in October before expanding to Outlook and Teams.

Separately, the company introduced new FinOps for AI capabilities aimed at helping organizations track and manage their AI spending, including expanded cost management tools in Agent 365 and the ability for end users to view their own credit usage and balances directly within Copilot.

Home and Code are set to begin rolling out through Microsoft's Frontier program in the coming weeks, while Autopilot is expected to expand to private preview by the end of the month.
