NASA Artemis II Launch Today: Historic Mission to the Moon Set for April 1 Lift-Off

NASA's Artemis II mission is set to launch today, April 1, marking the first crewed lunar flight in over 50 years. A diverse four-person international crew will travel aboard the Orion spacecraft for a 10-day journey around the Moon. This critical flight test validates life-support systems ahead of future lunar surface landings.

Mumbai, April 1: NASA is in the final stages of a historic countdown as it prepares to launch the Artemis II mission, marking the first time humans will travel toward the Moon since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. Scheduled to lift off on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, from Launch Pad 39B at the Kennedy Space Center, the mission will carry a crew of four astronauts on a 10-day journey around the lunar far side. The launch window opens at 6:24 PM EDT (3:54 AM IST), with meteorologists currently predicting an 80 per cent chance of favourable weather conditions.

Mission Profile and Objectives of Artemis II Mission

Artemis II is a critical flight test designed to verify that the Orion spacecraft's life-support systems can safely sustain a crew in deep space. Unlike the uncrewed Artemis I mission, which orbited the Moon in 2022, Artemis II will follow a "free-return trajectory". NASA Artemis II Update: SLS Rocket and Orion Spacecraft Return to Launch Pad for Historic Crewed Lunar Mission.

After launching atop the 322-foot-tall Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, the crew will spend the first 24 hours in a high Earth orbit to perform manual piloting manoeuvres and systems checks. Once verified, the spacecraft will perform a translunar injection burn, swinging approximately 4,700 miles above the lunar surface before gravity naturally pulls the capsule back toward Earth for a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.

The Crew of the Artemis II Mission

The mission features a diverse international crew of veteran aviators and engineers:

  • Reid Wiseman (Commander): A NASA veteran and former U.S. Navy test pilot.
  • Victor Glover (Pilot): A NASA astronaut who will become the first person of colour to travel beyond low-Earth orbit.
  • Christina Koch (Mission Specialist): An engineer who holds the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman.
  • Jeremy Hansen (Mission Specialist): A Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut and the first non-American to leave Earth's orbit for the Moon. NASA’s Artemis II Moon Rocket Back to the Hangar.

Final Launch Preparations

As of Wednesday morning, flight controllers have "awakened" the SLS megarocket, powering up the core stage and Orion spacecraft for final technical verifications. Engineering teams are currently monitoring cryogenic systems ahead of the precise fueling sequence, which involves loading hundreds of thousands of gallons of super-cooled liquid oxygen and hydrogen. The crew remains in standard pre-launch quarantine at the Neil A. Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building. NASA Associate Administrator Amit Kshatriya confirmed during a final pre-launch briefing that all "hardware, systems, and crew are in a strong posture" for the flight.

Path Toward the Lunar Surface

While the Artemis II crew will not land on the Moon, their mission serves as the final prerequisite for Artemis III, which is currently targeted for 2028. That subsequent mission aims to land the first woman and the next man near the lunar South Pole. By establishing a successful crewed track record with Artemis II, NASA intends to validate the infrastructure necessary for a sustained lunar presence and eventual human missions to Mars.
