TikTok Peer-to-Peer Payments Via DM Launch Soon; Check Expected Key Features

TikTok is developing a peer-to-peer payment feature for direct messages. According to a Bloomberg report, hidden app code reveals plans for tap-to-accept transfers using TikTok Pay. While not yet in active testing, the move highlights TikTok's wider expansion into financial services to compete with apps like Venmo.

TikTok is currently developing a new feature that will allow users to send money directly to one another through direct messages. If officially rolled out, the capability is expected to utilise the platform's native TikTok Pay infrastructure, which is already operational for TikTok Shop transactions across select Southeast Asian markets.

As per a report by Bloomberg, evidence of this functionality was uncovered within hidden code inside the current version of the application for U.S. Apple devices. The lines of code indicate that recipients will have a tap-to-accept option for incoming funds, alongside support for personal notes attached to transfers, creating a user experience closely mirroring platforms like Venmo. Anthropic Claude Integrates Gmail and Google Drive; Here's How It Works.

Development Stage and Wider Financial Push

While the discovery points to active early-stage development, company representatives stated that the feature is not currently undergoing live testing. Consequently, there is no official timeline or guarantee regarding when or if the social media giant plans a public release.

This initiative forms part of a broader corporate push into global financial services. Earlier this year, regulatory filings revealed that the company sought approval from Brazil's central bank to function as a financial technology provider offering lending and payment processing capabilities.

Expanding Beyond Traditional Social Media

The potential introduction of peer-to-peer transfers highlights how the platform continues to evolve past traditional entertainment boundaries. Having already integrated search tools, local discovery maps, games, hotel reservations, and TikTok Shop, the addition of direct money transfers would position the app in direct competition with established financial transfer services like Venmo and Zelle. Zepto Price Hike: Quick-Commerce Platform Hikes Free Delivery Minimum Order Value to INR 199.

Furthermore, TikTok is not alone in bridging social networking with financial tools. Competitor platforms, such as X, have similarly introduced dedicated financial features like X Money to facilitate peer-to-peer transactions directly within user networks.
