WhatsApp has introduced a new set of optional parental controls for teenagers, giving parents greater oversight of privacy settings, group activity, Channels, Status and the Meta AI experience without giving them access to their children’s private conversations. The company announced the controls on September 30, saying they are designed to help parents and teenagers decide together how the messaging platform should be used while preserving the privacy of personal communications.

Under the new system, parents can select privacy settings for their teenagers, including who can view their profile photo and who can add them to groups. If a teenager later wants to make those settings less restrictive, parental approval through a parent-set PIN will be required. Parents Will Get Alerts About Group Activity

WhatsApp will also notify parents when their teenager joins or leaves a group. Parents can additionally receive an alert when a group their teenager belongs to experiences a significant increase in membership. However, these controls do not allow parents to read the content of group conversations or private chats. The focus is on providing information about certain account activity rather than access to message content. Parents will also have options to manage how their teenager uses WhatsApp Channels and Status. These include deciding which Status updates the teenager can view and who can view the teenager's own Status updates.

Meta AI Controls Added for Teen Accounts

The new parental controls also extend to Meta AI, WhatsApp's built-in artificial intelligence experience. Parents can choose between the standard 13+ setting and a stricter "Limited Content" option, allowing families to select the level of restriction they consider appropriate for the teenager. WhatsApp said the controls are being developed gradually and will be expanded based on feedback from families. The company described them as tools intended to support conversations between parents and teenagers about responsible use of the platform rather than simply providing surveillance.

Private Messages and Calls Remain Protected

A key part of the announcement is that enabling parental controls does not give parents access to their teenager's private messages or calls. WhatsApp said personal messages and calls will continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption, meaning people outside a conversation, including WhatsApp itself, cannot access or listen to them. The controls are entirely optional. Parents can adjust the settings or turn them off, allowing families to change the level of oversight as circumstances change. Part of WhatsApp's Broader Teen Safety Push

The announcement builds on WhatsApp's earlier efforts to introduce additional safeguards for younger users. The company has previously announced parent-managed account options for pre-teens, with tighter restrictions designed around messaging and calling. The newly announced controls are aimed at teenagers who use the broader WhatsApp experience but whose parents want additional oversight of privacy settings, groups, Channels, Status and Meta AI.

WhatsApp has not presented the new system as a way for parents to monitor the actual content of their teenagers' private conversations. Instead, the company says the controls are intended to give families more tools to manage how teenagers use different features while maintaining end-to-end encrypted communications.
