How WhatsApp Scam Alert Works
The system relies on an on-device machine learning model downloaded locally when a user manually opts into the feature. Once active, the model evaluates incoming messages strictly from people who are not saved in the recipient's contact list.
By analyzing conversational structures, linguistic cues, and known fraud patterns derived from previous user reports, the software screens texts for potential risks. If a message matches suspicious criteria, a discreet warning banner reading that the text may be a scam appears inside the chat.
Privacy Protections and User Control
Meta has emphasized that the message classification process happens locally on the handset. Private chat contents are not automatically sent to WhatsApp, Meta, or any third party.
