Brazil Demands Changes From Discord
The government of Brazil is seeking a daily fine of 500,000 reais (INR 84.7 lakh approximately, or $97,099) if Discord fails to meet the required measures. The legal action comes after Brazil's data protection authority, the ANPD, suspended Discord's livestreaming features earlier this month over concerns about the safety of children and teenagers using the platform. Discord has rejected the government's allegations and said the lawsuit does not fairly represent the company's approach to safety and compliance. In a statement, the company said the lawsuit is "disproportionate" and does not accurately reflect its position on safety or its efforts to comply with Brazilian law. Discord also said it had submitted a proposal to Brazil's solicitor general's office aimed at improving the safety of its operations in the country, adding that the proposal included technical adjustments and a financial investment to strengthen safety measures. Government Says Agreement Fell Through
Brazil's Solicitor General Jorge Messias said Discord did not move ahead with an agreement that had been discussed with authorities. The proposed agreement would have required Discord to formally commit to making its operations comply with Brazilian law. With no agreement reached, the government proceeded with the lawsuit seeking damages and changes to Discord's platform.
