Indian-origin heart surgeon Dr Amal Krishna Bose, jailed for six years for s*xually assaulting five female NHS staff at a Lancashire hospital between 2017 and 2022, has been suspended and faces erasure from the UK medical register following a tribunal hearing. A senior Indian-origin heart surgeon, previously jailed for s*xually assaulting junior colleagues at a National Health Service (NHS) hospital in northern England, has been formally struck off the UK medical register. Dr Amal Krishna Bose, 55, was sentenced to six years in prison last year after a jury at Preston Crown Court convicted him of 12 counts of s*xual assault. The offences involved inappropriate touching and s*xualised comments directed at five female members of staff at Blackpool Victoria Hospital in Lancashire between 2017 and 2022.
Following a Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) hearing, Bose was suspended and will officially face erasure from the General Medical Council (GMC) register once the appeal period concludes. Tribunal Findings and Disciplinary Action
The MPTS determined that Bose’s convictions were "fundamentally incompatible" with continued registration as a medical professional. The tribunal noted that his 30-year career and surgical skills did not diminish the gravity of his actions, which reflected predatory behaviour and an abuse of his position as head of the cardiac department. "This person [Dr Amal Krishna Bose] has been suspended from the Medical Register and may not practise as a doctor in the UK," the GMC registry states, adding that the registrant will be erased pending the appeal period.
Abuse of Power and Workplace Culture
During the criminal trial, prosecutors detailed how Bose exploited his senior standing to subject junior female colleagues to persistent harassment. Victims reported feeling unsafe, losing trust in male colleagues, and altering their work patterns - with some taking extended sick leave or leaving their positions entirely to avoid him. Bose had denied the charges throughout the legal proceedings, attempting to dismiss his actions as "flirting" and routine "workplace banter".
Reacting to the case, Detective Chief Inspector Kirsty Wyatt of Lancashire Police emphasised the broader implications of workplace safety: "Everyone should feel able to go to work and feel safe, confident and secure, but Mr Bose has undermined that by abusing his position of power to s*xually assault these female members of staff and by doing so has caused enormous damage." Sacha Coyne, Senior Crown Prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) North West, added that the surgeon "appeared not to recognise the serious and lasting impact his actions would have" when characterising his conduct during the trial.
