Cockroach Infestations Rise Across Wales As Experts Warn of Growing Health Risks

Pest control experts and local authorities in Wales have reported a significant rise in domestic cockroach infestations, particularly within urban areas. According to recent data, Cardiff Council documented a 9% increase in cockroach reports at residential properties between 2024 and 2025. Experts attribute the surge to a combination of milder winter temperatures driven by climate change and an increase in high-density multi-occupancy housing, such as flats and apartments.

Urban Centers See Sharpest Increases

The rise in infestations is predominantly concentrated in urban centers, while rural areas have reported little to no activity. In 2025, Cardiff Council recorded 86 domestic complaints, followed by Newport Council with 31 and Swansea Council with 13.

Private pest control firms have noted a similar trajectory. Chris Corbett from Aderyn Pest Control, a private company based in Caerphilly, stated that callouts have climbed steadily over recent years. While cockroach infestations carry a social stigma often linked to poor hygiene, experts stress that the pests can affect any property, regardless of cleanliness. The BPCA warns that German cockroaches can carry pathogenic organisms capable of causing food poisoning, alongside harmful bacteria such as salmonella, staphylococcus, and streptococcus.

Public health officials and pest controllers strongly advise against using over-the-counter DIY treatments, as these can cause the insects to scatter and spread the infestation to neighboring properties. Professional eradication often requires coordinated access across multiple connected apartments to permanently eliminate the population. While Cardiff Council clarified that treating infestations is not a statutory obligation for local authorities regarding private residents, private sector services remain fully operational to handle the increasing demand.
