A 21-year-old man has been handed an indefinite prison sentence following a series of violent attacks in Edinburgh, including the knifepoint abduction and rape of a 15-year-old girl. Aaron Strachan was issued an Order for Lifelong Restriction (OLR) at the High Court in Edinburgh. Under the terms of the disposal, Strachan must serve a minimum punishment part of five years in custody before he becomes eligible to apply for parole. His name has also been placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely.
The court heard that the primary offence occurred in the early hours of May 25, 2025. Strachan, wearing a balaclava, approached the teenage victim as she waited at a bus stop in Edinburgh city centre. Feeling unsafe, the girl walked toward Princes Street, but Strachan tracked her from a distance. He then confronted her at a second bus stop, brandishing a knife and threatening her before forcibly leading her into the basement of a building on York Place. Strachan blocked the exit using wooden pallets before subjecting the teenager to a sexual assault. Investigators identified Strachan through DNA evidence recovered from the scene. Police located him on June 1, 2025, on Dalry Road, where he attempted to flee before being discovered hiding in nearby shrubbery.
In addition to the rape charge, Strachan pleaded guilty to two other violent acts committed around the same period. Just hours prior to the abduction, he repeatedly stabbed a man in the hand. Three days later, on May 28, 2025, he attacked another man by striking him on the head with a claw hammer, an assault that posed a threat to life. While awaiting disposal in March 2026, Strachan also briefly escaped from custody outside the courthouse before officers re-apprehended him a short time later.
