A former London chemistry teacher was convicted Thursday, August 27, of indecently assaulting two teenage boys at an all-boys school nearly forty years ago. Sally-Anne Bowen, 65, was found guilty of seven counts of indecent assault following a trial at Harrow Crown Court. The jury returned majority verdicts after deliberating for six hours and 29 minutes. The offenses occurred when Bowen was in her mid-20s and teaching at Christ's College in Finchley, north London, while the victims were approximately 14 to 15 years old.
Testimony and Court Proceedings
During the trial, one of the complainants testified that he had s*xual relations with Bowen "about 20 or 30 times" over several months while he was a pupil. The man, whose identity is protected by legal restrictions, stated that he visited Bowen at her home, viewed her as his girlfriend, and believed he was in love with her. He testified that Bowen repeatedly emphasised the need for absolute secrecy. He also noted, "Years she got to teach because I remained silent," and stated in a police interview that the experience led to "the destruction of my education." Prosecutor Madeleine Wolfe told jurors that the complainant did not fully comprehend the nature of the abuse until he became a parent himself. "There can be no doubt that there was a lasting impact on him," Wolfe said during her closing argument.
The second complainant testified that he and Bowen kissed in a café after being goaded by other students. Additional testimony from former pupil Tobias Oliver alleged that classroom discussions frequently turned s*xual, with Bowen discussing a s*x manual and engaging in unprofessional behavior. Another former colleague, Richard Luker, testified that the first complainant's mother had previously raised concerns about her son planning to travel abroad with Bowen. Defense and Verdict
Bowen denied all allegations, describing them as a "total fabrication". She testified that she suffered from an undiagnosed medical condition at the time that made sexual intercourse difficult and painful. "I didn't flirt with students, I was just friendly," Bowen told the court, denying any relationship with the first complainant and stating she did not know the second. Bowen, a resident of Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire, was released on conditional bail following the verdict. She is scheduled to be sentenced on November 20.
