A slow-moving cold front continues to push across South Florida on Monday, May 4, bringing heavy downpours to a region already grappling with extreme drought. While the severe storm threat has eased since the weekend, forecasters warn that persistent rainfall is now increasing the risk of flash flooding across major urban areas, including Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
Heavy Rain and Flood Threat
The frontal system remains nearly stationary over the region, triggering repeated rounds of showers and thunderstorms. Meteorologists are highlighting the risk of “training” storms, where multiple rain bands pass over the same locations, quickly boosting rainfall totals. Most areas are expected to receive 1 to 2 inches of rain, with isolated pockets seeing up to 3 to 4 inches in a short time. This raises concerns for localized flash flooding, especially in low-lying zones and heavily built-up areas where drainage is limited.
Relief for Drought and Wildfires
Despite the flood risk, the rain is providing much-needed relief to parched landscapes across South Florida. The region has been facing severe drought conditions and heightened wildfire danger, with a recent 1,500-acre blaze in Collier County forcing evacuations and disrupting traffic along I-75. The incoming moisture is expected to help ease fire conditions and support containment efforts, though officials caution that it will not immediately end the drought.
Temperatures Ease Slightly
Cloud cover and rainfall are helping bring temperatures down from near-record highs seen over the weekend. However, warm and humid conditions persist, with no major cooldown expected.
Residents are advised to remain cautious, as sudden heavy downpours could lead to waterlogged roads, reduced visibility, and hazardous driving conditions through the day.
