A former teacher at a now-closed Christian school in Georgia has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to s*xual abuse of a minor student - a case that also led to the arrest of a second teacher at the same school and ultimately forced the institution to shut down.
The Sentencing
Sherri Delle Mauldin, 61, was sentenced on Monday, May 18, to 12 years in prison followed by 25 years of probation after admitting to having s*x with a 15-year-old student multiple times. The abuse took place at Nathanael Greene Academy, a private Christian school in Greene County, Georgia. During the trial, Mauldin argued against a prison term, claiming she committed the abuse because she was in a "dark place." "I would be slightly disappointed by the court's sentence - only because there were so many aggravating circumstances," prosecutor T. Wright Barksdale said following the sentencing. He pointed to the wide age gap between a 61-year-old adult and a 15-year-old child, the teacher-student relationship, the fact that the abuse spanned over a month, and that it occurred across multiple locations involving multiple acts.
Two Teachers, One Victim
Mauldin was arrested just days after a second teacher at the same school, Bonnie Elizabeth Brown, 26, was accused of having s*xual contact with the same student. Both were arrested in March 2025 by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Unlike Mauldin, Brown has pleaded not guilty to the charge of improper s*xual contact with a minor and has requested a jury trial, which is scheduled to begin in June 2026.
School Shuts Down
The scandal led to the permanent closure of Nathanael Greene Academy in 2025. Before shutting down, the school issued a statement saying it was cooperating with authorities and conducting its own internal investigation through its Board of Trustees.
Victim Speaks Out
The student at the centre of the case has since spoken publicly about the abuse through his attorney, Ashley Mitchell. "These women took advantage of their positions as my teachers," he said in a statement. "My school did not protect me as a child."
Mitchell described the situation as a "classic case of predators having access to children and not much oversight."
