The Harris County Sheriff's Office said Michael Butler was driving the Tesla around 8 p.m. local time when the vehicle, allegedly using an automated driving assistance system, failed to remain in a single lane, left the roadway and slammed into a brick house at a high rate of speed.
Investigators said the vehicle struck M. Avila, who was inside the residence at the time of the crash. She was airlifted to a hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.
