“There were no injuries to the crew, who demonstrated resilience, grit, professionalism, and unwavering steadiness in their response,” Comer’s statement said. US Navy Destroyer Towed To Subic Bay
The loss of power left the Benfold dependent on assistance from other vessels. The Navy said the guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls, which is attached to the George Washington Carrier Strike Group, provided cooked meals to the destroyer's crew during the outage.
Other ships in the carrier strike group also provided assistance while the Benfold remained without normal power. Contractor tugboats eventually towed the destroyer to Subic Bay, where it was met by personnel from the Ship Repair Facility–Japan Regional Maintenance Center on July 28.
The crew received contracted lodging off the ship the following day. Power was restored on July 30, according to the Navy. Repairs were completed by August 7, when the ship conducted a berth shift for fuel, and the Benfold left Subic Bay on August 8. The ship subsequently arrived at Yokosuka, Japan. Comer said the Benfold is currently in port there.
Why 4 Days Without Power Was Significant
A prolonged loss of electrical power can affect far more than a warship's combat systems. On the Benfold, the outage disrupted basic services used by the crew, including sanitation, food preparation, cooling and potable water.
The conditions were particularly challenging because of the environment. Daytime temperatures in the South China Sea in late July averaged between 89 degrees and 98 degrees Fahrenheit (32 to 37 Celsius), according to weather records.
Carl Schuster, a former US Navy captain, who said he endured about four hours aboard a destroyer without power once near Puerto Rico, described what it is like in such a scenario.
“It would have been quite stressful. Operations officers were worried about crew morale and operational concerns, the engineers were focused on how to solve it and the navigator was worried about the direction they were drifting and what weather was coming. The crew was worried about weather, food and what was next. The (commanding officer) and (executive officer) were worried about all of that and when help would arrive,” said Schuster.
“I can assure you four hours in the waters southeast of Puerto Rico is not nearly as stressful as four days in the South China Sea,” he added.
USS Benfold Remains In Japan
The Benfold had been operating with the George Washington Carrier Strike Group, which includes the aircraft carrier USS George Washington, USS Robert Smalls and destroyers USS Benfold and USS Shoup. The group was operating in the South China Sea in late July following its transit through the Luzon Strait.
The carrier strike group is now involved in a broader shift in US naval deployments. The USS George Washington is expected to head toward the Middle East to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln and its strike group, according to US officials cited in the supplied reports.
However, the Navy has not said that the Benfold is accompanying the George Washington group to the Middle East. The destroyer did not transit the Malacca Strait with other ships of the carrier strike group and instead returned to Japan. Comer confirmed that the ship is currently in Yokosuka.
Second US Destroyer Power Failure In 2026
The Benfold incident is the second reported power-related casualty involving a US Navy destroyer operating in the Indo-Pacific Command's area of responsibility this year.
In April, the USS Higgins, another Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, suffered an engineering casualty involving its electrical distribution system. The incident temporarily knocked out power and propulsion while the ship was conducting routine operations in the Indo-Pacific.
The Higgins incident lasted several hours, and power and propulsion were subsequently restored. No injuries were reported. The Navy said the cause was under investigation. The two incidents are separate, and there is currently no public indication that they were caused by the same technical problem.
Arleigh Burke Destroyers Form US Navy's Surface Backbone
The Benfold and Higgins belong to the Arleigh Burke class, one of the largest and most important classes of US Navy surface combatants.
More than 70 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers are in service, making the vessels a central part of the Navy's surface fleet. Depending on their configuration, the roughly 500-foot-long ships have crews of about 329 to 359 sailors. The destroyers are designed to perform a range of missions, including air defence, anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare and strike operations.
Incident Comes Amid Wider Navy Strain
The Benfold's prolonged engineering casualty comes as the US Navy faces intense operational demands across multiple regions. The Navy has been maintaining a significant presence in the Indo-Pacific while also supporting US military operations connected to the Iran war and other global commitments.
The USS Abraham Lincoln, meanwhile, has faced scrutiny over crew morale and mental health after reportedly spending more than 200 days without a port call during operations against Iran.
Analysts and Democratic lawmakers have argued that the Navy is being stretched by the combination of ongoing operational requirements and its worldwide commitments.
The Benfold incident does not by itself establish a broader fleet-wide readiness problem. However, the fact that two Arleigh Burke-class destroyers experienced significant engineering-related power failures in the Indo-Pacific within a few months has added another issue for Navy planners and commanders to examine.
Investigation Underway
The Navy has not disclosed the specific technical cause of the Benfold's generator failure. The service said the cause of the power outage is under investigation.
For now, the destroyer has completed repairs and returned to operational status. Its current location is Yokosuka, Japan, while the Navy continues to examine what caused the four-day loss of power.
