US President Donald Trump has fired White House press secretary Katie Zacharia just five days after she took up the position, following mounting scrutiny over her legal credentials and criticism of her first press briefing. The development came hours after Trump publicly said he had advised Zacharia to ‘reconsider’ the job, suggesting that she did not need to endure the intense media scrutiny associated with the role.
Trump told reporters that he believed Zacharia had been treated unfairly by the media and that he had encouraged her to reconsider continuing as press secretary.
‘I told Katie in my opinion she was treated very unfairly,’ Trump said, adding that she had been ‘brutalised by the media’.
He further said, ‘I just think the press has been very tough on Katie and I said, “there's no reason you have to go through this”.’ Who Is Katie Zacharia? Donald Trump Appoints Truth Social Advisor and Former DHS Spokesperson As White House Press Secretary.
Why Did Trump Fire Katie Zacharia?
Zacharia's brief tenure was marked by questions about her professional background and qualifications. Her debut appearance at the White House press briefing podium last week attracted criticism, while reports raised questions about her claims of having worked as a lawyer.
Zacharia has described herself as a lawyer while building a career as a commentator for conservative media outlets, including Fox News and Newsmax. However, according to the report, neither Zacharia nor the White House had provided evidence that she had passed a bar examination or held a licence to practise law in any US state or China, where she previously worked for a law firm. The controversy intensified after reporters asked Trump where Zacharia had passed the bar examination. Trump stepped aside to allow her to respond, but her answer was unclear amid the noise from Marine One, the presidential helicopter.
What Did the White House Say About Her Legal Credentials?
The White House subsequently shared a statement from Zacharia outlining her educational background. She earned a bachelor's degree from Pepperdine University in 2007 and a law degree from Pepperdine Caruso School of Law in 2011, according to the university and her LinkedIn profile.
‘I practiced international transaction law, with all the appropriate credentials,’ the statement read.
However, the statement did not publicly establish that she held a licence to practise law in a specific jurisdiction.

Following her departure, Zacharia praised the US president, describing him as ‘kind, wonderful, gracious, thoughtful, enthusiastic, and hardworking’. She also said it had been an honour to work for him.
White House communications director Steven Cheung had earlier defended her appointment, calling Zacharia ‘uniquely qualified and whip smart’ and expressing confidence in her ability to communicate the administration's work to the American public.
Before her appointment, Zacharia worked as a senior communications adviser at Trump Media & Technology Group from June. She had also served for two months as deputy assistant secretary for public affairs at the Department of Homeland Security earlier this year.
