Australia Day, or Australia National Day, commemorates the arrival of British ships to establish the first European settlement in Australia in 1788. This observance has taken over many names over the decades, with it being called Anniversary Day, Foundation Day and Australian Natives’ Association Day. Indigenous Australians have also called it Invasion Day or National Day of Mourning to protest the arrival of the Britishers. While it’s a day of celebrations and fireworks for some people, other groups are against the celebrations of this day.
