Constitution Amendment Bill Passed, To Allow State Govt's Power To Classify OBC Lists

On August 10, Lok Sabha passed a constitutional amendment bill to restore the powers of the states & union territories to make their own OBC lists. The bill was passed with 385 members voting in its favour and no member opposing the same. Certain amendments moved by opposition members were rejected by the House. A constitutional amendment bill requires a special majority for passage in both Houses of Parliament. The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Seventh Amendment) Bill, 2021, was brought in by the Union Cabinet to undo a categorical Supreme Court order in May that only the Centre can prepare an OBC list. Opposition supported the bill despite targeting the Centre over a series of issues, including the farmers' protest & also the alleged Pegasus spyware scandal. Asaduddin Owaisi, AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP also supported the bill. But he accused the Modi-led government of bringing it keeping in mind the OBC vote bank. He charged the government by saying that they only supported a few OBCs. N K Premachandran (RSP) said the powers of States were taken away in 2018, and it is being restored now.
