The historic city in the state of Tamil Nadu, Chennai, formerly known as Madras, marks its 380th anniversary this year. August 22 is celebrated as Madras Day annually to commemorate the founding of the modern city. The idea of a Madras Day was first suggested by Chennai-based journalists Shashi Nair and Vincent D’Souza to historian S. Muthiah during a meeting of the trustees of the Chennai Heritage foundation in 2004. Since then, Madras Day celebrations are held every year. Watch the video to find out more about the day.
