Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed on Sunday that it successfully targeted and destroyed eight American military infrastructure sites across Kuwait and Bahrain. The joint ballistic missile and drone operation was described by Tehran as direct retaliation for a second consecutive wave of U.S. airstrikes hitting Iranian positions.

According to a statement from the IRGC’s Public Relations department broadcasted by Iranian state media (IRIB), the operation took place between 2:00 AM and 3:00 AM local time. The strikes specifically targeted the Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet headquarters at Port Salman in Bahrain. Following the reported incoming fire, the Kuwait Army General Staff Headquarters confirmed on the social media platform X that its air defense systems were actively engaged in intercepting "hostile missile and drone attacks." ‘New Aggression Will Be Met With a Crushing Response’: Iran Threatens US Forces After Strait of Hormuz Attacks.

Escalation and Accusations of Ceasefire Violations

The IRGC stated that its aerospace and naval forces acted in response to earlier U.S. strikes that hit five Iranian coastal positions on Sunday. Tehran has accused Washington of violating an active ceasefire agreement, referencing a 14-point memorandum of understanding (MoU) previously established to halt active hostilities in West Asia.

Iranian military officials warned that future American actions would face a "crushing response." The IRGC additionally asserted that under the current MoU, Iran maintains traffic control authority over the Strait of Hormuz, warning that non-compliant vessels would face stricter enforcement moving forward.

U.S. Position and Preceding Strikes

The latest military exchange follows an announcement from U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirming that American forces executed targeted strikes inside Iran on Saturday, acting under the direction of U.S. President Donald Trump. Donald Trump Says US Hit Iranian Targets After ‘Ceasefire Violation’, Warns ‘Iran Will No Longer Exist’.

According to CENTCOM, the American operation was triggered after Iran allegedly breached the ceasefire by launching a one-way drone attack against the M/T Kiku, a Panama-flagged commercial tanker carrying over two million barrels of crude oil near the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. aircraft targeted multiple facets of Iranian military infrastructure, including communications systems, air defense sites, surveillance networks, drone storage facilities, and naval mine-laying capabilities. CENTCOM characterized its actions as a necessary response to persistent Iranian threats against commercial shipping corridors.

Context of the Conflict

This weekend's events mark the second consecutive day of direct U.S. strikes against Iranian assets. Tensions initially surged following a June 25 drone strike on the Singapore-flagged cargo vessel M/V Ever Lovely, which U.S. authorities attributed to Iranian forces. The U.S. military responded on June 26 by striking coastal radar sites and drone storage centers inside Iran. Despite the heavy exchanges of fire, CENTCOM reported that commercial shipping traffic through the critical economic artery of the Strait of Hormuz is continuing, though American forces remain positioned for further contingencies.
