Police in Kyoto, Japan, have arrested a 46-year-old dispatch worker on suspicion of attempted murder after she allegedly gave a 30-year-old male acquaintance a muffin laced with a hazardous chemical. The targeted victim suffered acute medical complications after consuming a portion of the tainted pastry.

Details of the Incident

The suspect, identified as Kana Fujiki of Higashiomi City in Shiga Prefecture, is accused of carrying out the attack at a shopping center located in Kyoto's Nakagyo Ward, reports Japan Today. As per a report in  NTV, the muffin containing acrylamide - a substance designated as a hazardous chemical. The 30-year-old male victim consumed a bite of the muffin while driving home. After noticing an unusual and bitter taste, he stopped eating. Shortly afterward, he experienced severe neurological symptoms, including impaired consciousness, and was rushed to a hospital. Medical professionals admitted him for emergency care, and he remained hospitalised until early August before transitioning to outpatient treatment.

Investigation and Suspect's Stance

Investigators revealed that Fujiki was employed by a chemical company at the time of the incident. Authorities are actively probing whether she illicitly sourced the toxic substance - identified as acrylamide, a chemical compound classified as a hazardous substance - directly from her workplace. While law enforcement has established that a prior interpersonal dispute existed between the two individuals, the suspect has contested the primary charge.
