Tanker Struck by Multiple Projectiles North of Qatar, Casualties Reported: UKMTO

A commercial tanker was struck by multiple projectiles 51 nautical miles north of Madinat ash Shamal, Qatar, resulting in casualties, the UKMTO reported. The vessel has not been identified and authorities are investigating. The strike marks an expansion of shipping attacks beyond the Strait of Hormuz into the wider Arabian Gulf amid the ongoing US-Iran conflict.

A tanker sailing off the north coast of Qatar reports being struck “by multiple projectiles,” causing an unspecified number of casualties, the UKMTO maritime agency says. The incident took place 51 nautical miles (94 kilometers) off the coast of the tiny Gulf state, the British agency says, adding that authorities are investigating. It does not specify the origin of the ship.

The UKMTO Operations Centre said a tanker had reported being hit by multiple projectiles 51nm north of Madinat ash Shamal in Qatar. It said there were multiple casualties as a result of the attack. The extent of the casualties is unknown, however, in previous UKMTO warnings the word “casualties” has been used to describe seafarer deaths rather than injuries. The vessel involved has not been identified. 23 Indian Seafarers Reported Safe After Ukrainian Drone Attack Sets Fire to Oil Tanker off Russian Coast.

Attacks Spread Beyond Strategic Chokepoint

The incident sees Iran’s threat on shipping moving beyond the Strait of Hormuz which has been the focus of attacks on commercial shipping in recent weeks. Maritime security monitors noted that navigating the wider Gulf basin now carries heightened danger as strikes expand outside the customary maritime bottleneck.

At least 12 tankers have been attacked in Hormuz since 29 September, however incidents involving vessels in the wider Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman regions, a feature of the early months of the US – Iran war, have been few more recently.

Regional Threat Levels and Maritime Assessment

This is reflected in the Joint Maritime Information Center’s (JMIC) security threat level of “severe” for the Strait of Hormuz, while it is two levels lower at “moderate” for the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

Maritime authorities have advised all vessels transiting the central and upper Persian Gulf to maintain extreme vigilance, increase watch standing, and promptly report any suspicious radar contacts, aerial drones, or hostile small craft movements to regional coordination centers.
