Tanzania Lion Deaths: 10 Lions Found Dead in Ngorongoro, Poisoning Suspected

Ten lions have been found dead in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area, with preliminary findings suggesting that the animals may have died after ingesting poison. Authorities have launched an investigation to establish the exact cause of death and determine whether anyone was responsible. The lions were discovered on September 18 in the Ndutu area of Endulen Ward in Tanzania’s Arusha region, according to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA). The authority said its initial assessment indicated possible poisoning, but stressed that the findings remain preliminary.

“Preliminary findings suggest the animals may have died after ingesting poison,” the conservation authority said in a statement, adding that a technical investigation was underway to determine the definitive cause and identify those responsible. The discovery has prompted further scrutiny of wildlife protection in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where wild animals live alongside semi-nomadic Maasai pastoralist communities. Large carnivores can come into conflict with livestock owners when predators kill cattle or other domestic animals, creating a risk of retaliatory action.

Ngorongoro Is a Major Wildlife Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in northern Tanzania and one of the country's major wildlife and tourism destinations. It supports a wide range of species, including lions, elephants, buffaloes and endangered black rhinos. The area is also known for its multi-use conservation model, in which wildlife protection takes place alongside the traditional activities of pastoralist communities.

Lions Face Wider Conservation Threats

The latest deaths come amid broader concerns about threats facing large wildlife across East Africa. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies lions as vulnerable, with habitat loss, declining prey populations and human-wildlife conflict among the pressures affecting the species. A separate wildlife poisoning investigation has also been underway in neighbouring Kenya, where 18 elephants died in the Amboseli ecosystem.
