Smita Patil was one of the most prominent actors associated with India’s parallel cinema movement, particularly during the 1970s and 1980s. Known for her powerful performances and ability to portray complex characters, she earned a special place in Indian cinema through films such as Manthan, Bazaar, Ardh Satya and Waaris.

Her career was cut short when she died in December 1986, just weeks after giving birth to her son, Prateik Babbar. She was only 31 at the time of her death.

In recognition of her contribution to Indian cinema, Smita was awarded the Padma Shri, the country’s fourth-highest civilian honour.

Even decades after her death, her performances continue to be remembered by film lovers, with her work remaining an important part of discussions around parallel cinema and realistic acting in India.

One of her final film appearances was in Galiyon Ka Badshah, directed by Sher Jung Singh. The film featured an ensemble cast that included Raaj Kumar, Hema Malini, Mithun Chakraborty, Poonam Dhillon, Aruna Irani, Ranjeet, Danny Denzongpa, Om Shivpuri and Iftekhar, alongside Smita Patil. (ANI)
