Sivasagar, April 1: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Wednesday accused the Himanta Biswa Sarma government in Assam of being corrupt, claiming "mafia rule" in the state. She also refuted claims of politicising singer Zubeen Garg's death, and asserted that seeking justice for a respected figure is a political duty rather than opportunism. Speaking to the reporters here, she said that people desire a government that would only work towards serving them.

"This is a corrupt Government. People can see how everything is being done through threats. There is mafia rule, syndicate rule. I think people are tired. They want the same Assam to rise. They want a new government that would only work towards serving people. People know that our leader (Gaurav Gogoi) is honest, and they want to bring him forward," Gandhi said. Assam Assembly Elections 2026: Congress Releases 5th List of Candidates for Polls, Check Names Here.

Responding to the Assam CM's allegation that the Congress was politicising the death of singer Zubeen Garg, the Congress leader rejected the charge and said that seeking justice for a widely respected public figure should not be viewed as politicisation.

"I honestly don't believe that such things should be politicised. But I think that when there is a demand among the public that somebody who they revered and respected is not getting justice, then, as politicians, isn't it our duty to say that yes, we are going to make every effort to give justice? How is that politicisation?" Gandhi said. Assam Assembly Elections 2026: Mallikarjun Kharge Announces 5 Guarantees, Promises Cash Transfers, INR 50,000 Aid for Women, Zubeen Garg Death Case Justice.

Earlier in the day, Priyanka Gandhi delivered a strong critique of the state and central government during a rally in Nazira, urging people of Assam to reject what she called a "government of double-slavery" and vote for a Congress-led administration focused on public welfare. "They only work for you when they see some benefit in it for themselves. This has not been the tradition of this country. Even today, we want a government in Assam which doesn't scare you, doesn't threaten you, doesn't serve its own selfish interests, but serves you, works honestly for you, advances and strengthens your culture and your civilisation," Gandhi said while addressing a public meeting here.

The polling for all 126 Assembly constituencies will be held in a single phase on April 9, while the counting of votes is scheduled for May 4. Assam will witness a fight between the incumbent BJP-led NDA government and Congress for the 126-seat assembly. The BJP is contesting the elections with Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People's Front (BPF). The NDA will look to secure a third consecutive term, while the Congress aims to defeat the ruling party to return to power.
