New York [USA], August 29 (ANI): Swiss tennis maestro Roger Federer entered the second round of the ongoing US Open after defeating Japanese player Yoshihito Nishioka in their opening clash of men's singles event here at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday.
The 37-year-old handed over a crushing 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 straight-sets defeat to Nishioka in a match that lasted one hour 52 minutes.
The twenty-time Grand Slam Champion, who is undefeated in the first round of a major slam since 2003 French Open, continued his good run of form and did not break much sweat to get past his Japanese opponent.
Federer will now take on Benoit Paire of France in his third-round match.
In other clashes, former world number one Novak Djokovic also moved to the second round of the tournament as he edged past Marton Fucsovics of Hungary 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 in their opening match.
The two-time US Open champion struggled a bit against his Hungarian opponent but ultimately managed to beat him in a match that went on for two hours and 58 minutes.
In women's singles event, Russia's Maria Sharapova kick-started her campaign at the US Open with a bang as she swept aside Patty Schnyder of Switzerland 6-2, 7-6 in the first round. (ANI)
