Hyundai Motor Group announced on Wednesday, October 14, that it will invest USD 15.5 billion in India through 2032, reinforcing the country's critical role in the company's global growth, emerging market expansion, and next-generation technological innovation. The multi-year investment plan was unveiled following a meeting between Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Tuesday.

“India is a key strategic market for Hyundai Motor Group's future growth, expansion into emerging markets and next-generation automotive innovation. The investment will be made over seven years starting this year,” Chung said, reports IANS. 2026 Toyota Glanza Facelift India Launch Set for October 14.

Expanding Manufacturing and R&D Infrastructure

According to reports from the Yonhap news agency, the capital commitment will target several key operational areas, including the expansion of manufacturing capacities, the development of domestic research and development (R&D) infrastructure, the cultivation of local suppliers to boost parts localisation, and the advancement of future mobility technologies. To execute the roadmap efficiently, the group plans to establish a dedicated investment entity in India.

Market Context and Sales Milestone

India represents the world's third-largest automotive market after China and the United States, with a population of 1.47 billion. Because import tariffs on automobiles in India range between 70 percent and 110 percent, manufacturers rely heavily on domestic production footprints.

Hyundai Motor Co. currently operates two manufacturing plants in Chennai and an additional facility in Pune, while its affiliate Kia Corp. runs a plant in Anantapur. Together, these facilities command a combined annual production capacity exceeding 1.4 million vehicles.

Last year, Hyundai and Kia sold a combined 852,164 vehicles in India, capturing 18.7 per cent of the passenger vehicle market and securing the second-place ranking behind Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. SUVs proved particularly popular, with Hyundai selling 398,937 units, accounting for roughly 70 per cent of its total domestic sales. Mahindra XUV 3XO CNG Leaked Ahead of Launch on October 15.

Furthermore, Hyundai's cumulative vehicle sales in India are on track to cross the 10-million milestone this year, nearly three decades after operations began with the launch of the Santro minicar at the Chennai plant in 1998. The company reported 9.88 million cumulative sales through the third quarter of the year, according to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).
