Are Banks Open Today, September 27, 2026? Check Status Ahead of 3-Day Bank Strike

Public sector banks will remain open today, September 27, 2026, on RBI directives ahead of a three-day nationwide strike from September 28 to 30. Private banks are likely to observe usual Sunday closures. AIBOA has asked members to skip Sunday duty despite the directive.

Public sector banks and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) across India will remain open today, Sunday, September 27, 2026, following directives from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), in an unusual weekend arrangement aimed at giving customers an additional window to complete essential transactions before a three-day nationwide strike disrupts banking services from September 28 to September 30. To minimise public inconvenience from the extended shutdown, the RBI has authorised bank branches, administrative offices, currency chests, and ATM-linked facilities to operate fully today, with lenders including the State Bank of India (SBI) confirming that their branches would be accessible to handle customer requests ahead of the strike.

Private Banks Likely to Stay Shut Today

The Sunday opening directive mainly applies to state-run lenders, and since private sector banks are not part of the upcoming strike, they are expected to observe their usual Sunday closures unless their managements decide otherwise. Customers of private lenders will need to depend on digital channels or wait for the next working day. No Bank Holiday This Sunday! Banks To Remain Open on September 27 Ahead of 3-Day Strike.

Union Pushback Over Sunday Duty

Despite the RBI directive, some friction remains on the ground, with the All India Bank Officers' Association (AIBOA) issuing an advisory asking its members not to report for duty today. The union has cited Sunday as a statutory holiday under the Industrial Disputes Act and confirmed it will go ahead with a stay-out strike from Monday to Wednesday, meaning staffing and service levels at public sector branches could vary by location today. Banks Open on Sunday: Public Sector Branches To Function on September 27; Here's Why.

Customers Advised to Use Digital Channels

Banks have urged customers to complete any non-deferrable branch transactions right away, with SBI advising account holders to rely on alternative banking channels through the strike period, including ATMs and Automated Deposit-cum-Withdrawal Machines (ADWMs) for cash needs, and UPI, mobile banking, internet banking, and the YONO platform for digital transactions.

While major lenders have said they will try to keep core operations functional, physical branch services and clearing operations are expected to face significant delays between September 28 and September 30.
